Principles of Design


Now that we have briefly covered the elements of visual design, what do we do with them? Right now, these elements are just our building blocks to create visuals. What we are still missing are application techniques to best utilize our elements. Proper use of visual design principles will turn our building blocks into wondrous works or beauty.



The location or arrangement of visual elements in a work of art is called composition. It describes how art elements are put together to create a comprehensive and coherent design. In video games, composition is crucial. Think of a user interface: the placement of screens, buttons and player information are all affected by composition. So, how do we create good composition? Let’s look at some other design principles.
